My first experience wildcrafting St John's Wort flowers took place in the Sierra Nevada about 15 years ago. I took a special trip to Reno, Nevada, to obtain some "Everclear" alcohol with which to prepare, or "put up" a TINCTURE. I became entranced with the company of the plants, picking individual blossoms for several hours and placing them in an alcohol/spring water blend inside a large, wide-mouth glass jar reserved for that purpose.
I was awed to witness the "menstruum" ( alcohol/water blend) gradually undergoing a subtle transformation that brought it from clear to blood-red within 72 hours. I felt as a participant in a Mystery rite, the purpose of which -the creation of blood itself- had been kept a secret till it was no longer possible to mistake the liquid for anything except blood!
My picking fingers wore the deep purplish red color of Hypericin, the primary medicinal constituent of the plant. The dye stayed with me several days and I enjoyed tasting its slightly acrid essence by putting my fingers in my mouth.
